The concept of medals dates back to the original Greek Olympic games to the the present Olympic games. Every country in the world adopted the use of medals as a means of recognition and achievement. When we refer to an item as a medal, the product has a loop or ring at the top for hanging on a ribbon, chain or key chain. Medals have become the preferred and economical way to show achievement, victory, and recognition. A medal offers several options including the metal used, desired finish, and packaging and presentation.
We first discuss and consult with clients about their ideas and budget. We determine the client’s choice of metal, finish and production based on the customers artwork, or rough sketch, and budget. The client first chooses the metal to be used ranging from brass, bronze, iron, zinc, and semi-precious metal such as sterling and gold filled.
We have two options in making a custom designed medal. The first being die casting in zinc from a steel mold and the second being die striking of a die. Both processes produce quality medals since the molds and dies are high polished and the metal is forced under pressure into the mold or die. The main difference is the weight. A custom diecast zinc medal will be about 30% to 35% lighter than a die struck brass medal. The medals produced from either processes have high-quality finishes.
The clients artwork tells us if the medal is 3-dimensional or 2-dimensional. Three dimensional designs refer to modeling and sculpturing of multiple levels, while two dimensional designs refer to just two levels that are flat. Three dimensional designs have higher prep charges than two dimensional designs. From there, we establish the proper diameter or size, and thickness. The standard thickness is 3mm (1/8”). Other thicknesses range from 2mm up to 6mm. The size of the custom designed medals usually range between 1-1/2” to 3." However, we can produce smaller or larger sizes.
Our standard finishes are hand buffed antique brass, pewter, or bronze. In addition, we can electroplate with imitation gold, silver or bronze, and real gold or silver plating. Further finishes include bright polishing, sandblasting and a matte finish. The finishing concept creates contrast between the high point of the medal and the background. Again, the design will determine the best option. All additional plating and finishes will have a higher cost.
We have two methods of enameling; soft epoxy enamel and hard stoned enamel. The soft enamel will be recessed into the metal and the hard-stoned enamel will be raised to the metal rim. Soft epoxy enamel is less expensive than hard stone enamel. The total number of colors and the area being enameled will determine the additional cost.
We supply several options for packaging such as poly bags, a plastic box in two sizes with a foam insert, and velour covered hard boxes. All boxes will hold the medal and ribbon.
After the design requirements are completed, we provide the quote based on quantity and budget. Minimum quantities and price breaks range based on the selection of die struck or diecast medals. Which process to be used has to be established from the beginning in consolation with the customer.
